RI liquids

Hi! Do any of you have recommendations on where to buy the RI liquids for the refractometer? I used to have a set of 5 but those are long gone.

Hi Kim,

Welcome to the forum!

Gem Master 1.81 Premium can be found on-line in many locations. I bought my last bottle from JTV for $60. They currently have it for about $57. Some other retailers are selling it for up to $120.

Buyer beware though… some of the cheap stuff is unreliable. So far JTV hasn’t been a bad resource for it.

Curious of what you mean by a set of five? Did you have 5 different RI fluids?

Cheers!

Hi Troy, thanks. I have a GGS from TIJT and we had a set of 5 since each has a different range. 1.81 was the highest RI liquid and the other 4 were in the lower ranges for better accuracy.

I agree with Troy. JTV had good prices and quick delivery. Do read the EPA warning paper that comes with it. And use good ventilation!

Hi Kim,

I am unfamiliar with GGS or TIJT. Is this Paris Junior College?

I am intrigued about the options for various refractive fluids. Other industries that use RI Fluids for subjects like microbiology are available from science supply companies like Cargille, who does offer the 1.81 fluid for gemology.

Just curious… thanks!
