Recutting Diamonds and colored stones

The professional gemologist course says when recutting a stone you have the customer sign a potential damage waiver due to the stone possibly having “hidden weaknesses”. My question is what are the potential hidden weaknesses?

After you cut and facet a few stones you will have greater understanding. Internal Strain; Cleavage Planes; Susceptibility to temperature changes and vibration (sometimes ultrasonic) on the saw and polishing wheel, but not limited to.

Thank you

Having recut several thousand gemstones in the last 50 years, I have yet to have one fracture on me during the cutting process. Nor have I had a customer complain about the recutting.

I can only assume that to have the stone fracture during recutting is that the cutter got very agressive with the cutting wheel and applied too much pressure.
