Ok here is another spinel. Does this also have windowing? Do asscher cuts just encourage windowing? What is going on here with my stones.
Hi Julia,
Asscher cut spinels are absolutely stunning and shouldn’t display windowing when proportioned correctly with respect to the stone’s RI. Do the stones have 58 step-cut facets?
Unfortunately the blue stone has significant windowing. ![]()
What are the dimensions and weight of the stones?
Can you confirm these stones are Spinel? Did both come from the same vendor? And
did the vendor provide any certification documents from a reputable lab?
If you haven’t seen these articles on IGS, they are very good resources on Spinel.
IGS offers a Spinel specialization course that is included with your IGS subscription.
Cheers!

It’s the shallow bottom pavilion angle that creates the window, not the particular cut. Asscher are OK, but, like emerald cuts, not all the pavilion facets reflect at once, so there is an on and off as they are moved and at face up, they tend to have an extinction at the second step from the bottom, which moves around as the stone is tilted. As I said in the other thread, easy to fix the window, altho’ this one looks a little bigger. Surely less than a 10% to 15% weight loss. Worth it since the color is so much improved…it will all look like the collar of the crown. -royjohn
