Gemstone sales and appraisals

My wife’s father was a university professor and collector of fine arts. When she was a little girl, he gave to her a beautiful Alexandrite that measures 1cm across. At this stage of her life, age 76, she has decided to sell the stone. As it could be quite valuable, we have no idea how to safely have it appraised and to sell it. Looking for advice.
