Hi Joel, Out of curiosity, what’s the origin of the name ‘Bytownite’? Anyone living in Ottawa knows that that is the original name/now nickname of Canada’s capital. Any relation? Your thoughts? (A little end-of-week levity

Per Joel Arem’s gem encyclopedia entry for bytownite, the name “bytownite” does indeed come from the former name for Ottawa: Bytown.

How did this question start in the first place? Just out of curiosity? The answer is correct and it wasn’t something I knew… thanks for the reply… just FYI: bytownite is next to anorthite in the plagioclase series… not a common feldspar
I, Pamela, a gemologist/jewellery designer in Ottawa, and one fully familiar with the capital’s nickname of Bytown(e) (named after Colonel By) stumbled upon Bytownite and asked the question. Simple as that Stephen.
