Bytownite -- Question for Joel

Hi Joel, Out of curiosity, what’s the origin of the name ‘Bytownite’? Anyone living in Ottawa knows that that is the original name/now nickname of Canada’s capital. Any relation? Your thoughts? (A little end-of-week levity  )

Pamela

Per Joel Arem’s gem encyclopedia entry for bytownite, the name “bytownite” does indeed come from the former name for Ottawa: Bytown.

How did this question start in the first place? Just out of curiosity? The answer is correct and it wasn’t something I knew… thanks for the reply… just FYI: bytownite is next to anorthite in the plagioclase series… not a common feldspar

I, Pamela, a gemologist/jewellery designer in Ottawa, and one fully familiar with the capital’s nickname of Bytown(e) (named after Colonel By) stumbled upon Bytownite and asked the question. Simple as that Stephen.

okay, thanks… solves one mystery. must have first been discovered there or is a type locale.
