Was told this might be Australian but I’m not sure. Very much wanting to get some thoughts and input on this stone. Weight is 48 carat kinda has a green ish hue went viewed from the side. Looks like it was cut on the one side
It does look like a piece of sapphire ‘bomb’ that possibly someone has trimmed off to get at a cleaner part. You can see from the picture in the calipers that the stone has a lot of silk in it. You might be able to polish it and see if you can get a star sapphire out of it. It will be took dark and included to cut a coloured stone. Certainly I could believe it’s Australian, I am and I work with a lot of our sapphires and there’s nothing there that tells me it’s not. You do get similar material from certain locations in Africa as well.
I owned a sapphire mine for 20 years and do not see any sign of a sapphire in your photos. The sudden shift in direction of the lines on the stone is not found in sapphires.
Classic natural Australian sapphire rough, I have handled hundreds of kg of this material since the early 1970’s
Shairlyn is right about that sample in regards to possible asterism. And the sample would also be a poor choice for most classic gem cuts. However, if sliced thin, you could get some very beautiful intarsia designs. Especially if mounted to a reflective backer.
