What is 45000 carats of sky blue transparent untreated aquamarine valued at cabed facetted and left alone? Is it worth more than 1000.00 by itself?
It’s difficult to tell the grade of this from a single picture. Aquamarine specimens can sell for as low as $0.01 to a high of $15.00 per carat. A lot depends on the quality of the stone, for example, is this translucent? How much matrix covers the specimen? Does it have a gem-like appearance? Not sure exactly what you mean when describing this as “cabed, facetted and left alone” but I am assuming this is rough which may have been cut and polished. Again, difficult to tell with one picture.
I mainly deal with resale of faceted gemstones so I am no expert on specimens like this but did a search and found that tumbled & polished “chunks” or low-grade, translucent material typically sells for $0.02 to $0.10 per carat. Polished rough specimens with strong visible blue color can range from $0.50 to $2.50 per carat if it was seen as a “Decorator” item. Collector’s might drive that price much higher if it is transparent as stated on the certificate. That being said, EGL gets mixed reviews, although if it is the USA division it is considered more reliable. Again, a challenge to assess with a single picture with one view. Hope this helps.
This is all transparent aquamarine. The color is sky blue. It is 45000 carats.
Hi Jennifer,
I have to agree with @KeithB05644. EGL has a questionable reputation. There are some discrepancies in the report, that begs the question: “Did they do any diagnostic testing at all?”
For instance:
-
“Grading Results” is misspelled.
-
Grading section has adjectives that one would assume to be used when describing a facetted stone, versus rough material.
-
SG is given as a range versus a singular value. And there is no RI information included.
You will loose some material from the original 45,000ct when it is facetted or cabbed. It will be challenging to provide a valuation, until the stone has been processed into its final cut/shape.
The largest cut aquamarine weighs 10,363 carats (4.6 lbs) from a crystal weighing about 60 lbs. You can read about that one here: Dom Pedro Aquamarine
Cheers!

I’m not sure anyone can provide an exact value for this from a picture. The certificate states it is transparent but that can’t really be confirmed based on that picture. Transparent materials allow light to pass through so objects on the other side are perfectly clear, which can’t be seen from this picture.
Not sure where you are located or if there are any lapidarists or shops that sell crystals near you who could assess that specimen to help you, so I did a search on Etsy to get an idea of what’s out there online in the resale market. There are few sky blue, transparent (easily seen from the pictures) specimens that have no matrix atached. Two of these are listed as 3000 cts and are selling for $0.04-0.05 per ct. There is one 3kg (15,000ct) specimen also selling for $0.04 per ct.
Considering the size alone, my assumption is that your specimen could be sold as a Collector’s piece or rough for faceting, which opens the possiblity of a higher value. But again, I mainly deal with faceted gemstone resale. Hope this helps
Based on what’s seen in the picture, the color is very nice, but the specimen is translucent at best and cracked and included. It may have value as a specimen, my knowledge there is limited, but as facet or cab grade rough, it isn’t worth much. I cannot see the entire stone, so there may be some clear areas worth faceting that I can’t see, but I doubt it. royjohn
This is transparent aquamarine.
Hi Jennifer,
Was the stone shipped to you just wrapped in cardboard material, or was there more packing material to protect it?
Just out of curiosity, were there any small fragments that may have broken off the main specimen during shipping?
It would be easier to test a small piece for SG and observe internally with a loupe or microscope for clarity. ![]()
This would be worth way more than $1,000. Just doesn’t look that big in Pic based on paper crinkled up around it looks smaller!? Obviously transparent beyond just translucent seems odd to me. I could be wrong
