Formerly an analytical chemist involved in forensic drug analysis and public health and environmental issues, I am now engaged in private research on natural zirconium silicate ie. zircon. This mineral still presents some mysteries to be solved, including causes of various colors and their modification by heat treatments. My focus is on using the very pure gigacryst zircons from the Mud tank carbonatite in central Australia to decipher the scientific puzzle.
